Optical Scattering Electric Field Norm

Hi,

I am currently attempting to model the optical scattering off a 2D nanoparticle. The background electric field is a plane wave only in the y direction, so I plotted both the electric field norm and the magnitude of the y component of the electric field. Both should yield the same result as the electric field only has a y component, but the plots showed a discrepancy between the two. Does anyone know a reason of why this discrepancy occurs?

Hi,

After scattering you have both y and x component of electric field. I think this is the reason.

Thanks for the reply. I've recently just made a plot of the magnitude of the electric field including the x and y components, but the x component had a negligible effect; the discrepancy still remained.

Both plots (of the e-field norm and magnitude that I calculated using sqrt(realdot(Ex, Ex) + realdot(Ey, Ey))) have the shape shape, but one appears to be stretched.

I have included a graph of the results for reference. Thanks!
