Remeshing a Deformed Mesh in 4.0a

Hi,
I am simulating the heat transfer in biological tissue that has been compressed. First I apply a gravitational load, and next I want to run the heat transfer calculations on the deformed geometry. If I want to run the heat transfer part in a separate study, how do I specify the study to use the deformed geometry from the first study (structural mechanics)? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi

you need to store the study (stationary one) and have the next solver start from there. In v4.0a the manual control of the study nodes is tedious and slightly frustrating ;) you should seriously consider to update

Good luck

Thanks Ivar. I am unable to upgrade to 4.1 at the moment. For 4.0a, do I just set the initial values to take from the solution of the previous study step? Thank you.

Hi

the advantage with v4.0 is that you need to delete regularly the solver sequence as it gets easily corrupted and then to rebuild it, you become hence this way a specialist on solver nodes, something I mostly do not use as the default of COMSOL is mostly OK, but then when you really need a custom settings, you are without experience on "how to"

To avoid loosing all your Results settings, make a dummy study and attach the results to this one then delete and rebuild your solver, populate it with initial conditions and reconnect the results node, a lot of time gained

One last question. Should I be using the moving mesh physics for this or is it not necessary if I am manually setting the initial conditions as the solution to the solid mechanics portion? Thank you.

Hi Austin

Have a look at the attached picture on how to remesh a deformed geometry and export to CAD or reuse it in a new model. This was done with version 4.1.

Best regards,
Zoran

Thank you Zoran, very useful, I've been trying to find out how to do this for ages.

Hi,

I have one question regarding using deformed mesh generated from solution 1 and use it in solution 2 as shown below: Is the model structure shown is the valid way of doing it or I HAVE to store it elsewhere and introduce it in a separate Model to do further analysis with deformed structure?

-----------------------------model structure that I have .........................................

physics 2

deformed configuration (from mesh1)

STUDY1

step2 (I AM ASUMING THAT STEP 2 WILL USE DEFORMED MESH GENERATED FROM SOLUTION 1)

RESULTS
Dataset
solution1 (created deformed mesh by right clicking on solution 1)
solution2

hallo,
I was trying to export the deformed configuration as CAD model (deformed structural mechanics under load, 3D) using your scheme in the 4.1 version, as I just have the 4.0 version, I don 't have deformed Configuration plug in.
please, do you know how to do this with 4.0?

Thanks in advance for your help,
looking forward to hear you soon,

Best,
Hamid

Hello Zoran,

I also followed the workflow to remesh a deformed geometry as you indicated on your nice outline. It all worked well in version 4.1. But now I'm using 4.2a (4.2.1.134), and just repeating the same steps, I don't get the deformed geometry but a copy of the original geometry. Maybe this is a bug in this latest release?

I agree that this same thing is occurring in 4.3a -- e.g., the imported mesh is not the deformed mesh. Does anyone have an update as to how this should actually work in the newer versions? The workflow seems logical, and it would be nice to see it work OK.

Hello Zoran,

I am also having the same issue with COMSOL 4.3. When I make the deformed mesh, it is the original geometry, not the deformed geometry. Any updates on this?

Thank you in advanced,

Adan

Hi

it could be that you need to turn on the solver "non-linear" geometries in the later versions, it's just a guess from my part as I'm not by my WS so I cannot check, but there was a change in the later versions on the way the spatial and material frame was handled (and from where)

Good luck
Ivar

Thank you Zoran, that is exactly what I needed. However I tried that method and COMSOL 4.1 crashes with a java error when I try to solve the second step. Do you have a suggestion to get around this? I have attached the model and the crash log, if it helps.

To follow up on this post, I avoided the crashing by separating the two steps into completely separate COMSOL files. I hope that helps someone.

I am trying to run a Joule heating effect simulation in 2D. The idea of the simulation is to dissolve the filament by Joule heating effect. I have introduced deformed geometry to dissolve the filament but in my simulation the edge of the filament cross the symmetry axis and show some warnings. I want to show stop the simulation when it touches the symmetry axis but I can’t control it using simulation time. On the other hand when the edge of the filament touches the symmetry axis the temperature should be room temperature in all domain as there is no current but currently, I am getting a temperature distribution. Any help will be highly appreciated.

I was able to export the deformed geometry as dxf file by following this topic. However, the dxf file cannot be opened by either autocad or linkcad. Anyone know why?
Thank you.

Hi Ivar
I am simulating a reinforced concrete beam with settlement at supports. To model the settlement at one support, I used the deformed geometry and solid physics and performed stationary study. Then, I continued with "Data set---> Solution 1----> Remesh Deformed Configuration". However, I can not do Remesh Deformed Configuration because it said:

" Deformed configuration can only be created for solid geometries".

So, could you please give me an advise to solve the problem. Many thanks in advance.

Regards
