Alright, I checked with the web dev team and it is not a bug.
Here is how it works: first, as you suspected, you need to upload your file on some website, and then you click on the Insert Image button, which adds the string ![](http://)
in your post, and finally you replace the part between parentheses with the actual URL where your file is.
I learned something today!

Alright, I checked with the web dev team and it is not a bug.
