Most of the solvers will take advantage of multiple cores, during the main part of the solution stage. Check your settings and check to see if the cores are being utilized. Also, consider your meshing (which may be finer than necessary) and the element discretization. You may be able to work with linear, rather than the default quadatic elements. There are enormous differences in speed and memory requirements, depending on the choices of the solvers and the discretization of the elements. So be sure to learn all about them.
