Principle of Eigenfrequency Solver

I use the eigenfrequency solver to calculate resonant modes in photonic microcavities.
I this regard, I'm wondering how the the eigenfrequencies are actually calculated. I looked into the comsol documentation, but found only explanations on how to derive quantities like the Q factor from the complex eigenvalue.
From harminv for meep I know that a broadband pulse is started in the structure and the less damped frequencies are identified as resonant modes.
Is the approach in Comsol similar? I only found the comment, that for solving the eigenfrequency problem a time harmonic approach has to be used, which would point into the afore mentioned direction.
Maybe someone of you can give me a short explanation on this, or can tell me where to find this information.
