setting null domains in staged studies

I am doing a thermal model in two steps. First step is to cool the domain in a transient model. Second step is to remove a small circular domain from the center of the original domain (the original domain also has the center included in geometry but it is given the same physics as the surrounding domain). In the second step, I need to apply a convective BC to the circular edge of the removed domain. Basically, I'm excavating a tunnel after the ground around it is frozen.

The problem is, when the second study starts to solve, all the FEM nodes that used to be in the circle are void and the solution stops.

So, how can I remove a domain and have the new study still use the end of study 1 temperatures as the initial condition in the new study.

There must be a way to do staged models where domains are added or removed and solutions from previous stages are used as initial conditions in the new stage.
