Ultrsonic flow meter time of flight configuration

Hello everyone, I want to make an ultrasonic meter which is capable to calculate the speed of gas and give me the delta T (Time difference between the receiver and sender). I am using comsol's by default model and I am confused on few things if anyone can clear me please:- 1. why is there a background flow? what does it means? 2. The default model is using water as a fluid can I use the gas for the same model? 3. why are they using 2 components? Please let me know your thoughts on it. Best Regards, Uzair Abbas
