Meshing in a thin fracture

I am trying to generate mesh for 2D geometry with dimensions(fracture-matrix):
i) 0.1mm x 0.1m for fracture
ii) 0.05m x 0.1m for adjacent rock-matrix
Due to smaller fracture width there is dense mesh generated and it becomes computationally expensive especially for reactive transport simulations.
May anyone like to help about what is the best strategy to get computationally efficient mesh.
