shrinking and eventually disappearing mesh

Hello,

I'm working a problem where a porous particle is being heated and vaporized. I am using moving mesh with a prescribed normal mesh velocity to shrink the solid domain of the particle (see attached figure).

The problem arises when the walls shrink to the point that boundaries are touching at some places, which should separate the particle into new, multiple sub domains or something. Then these domains would then continue shrinking until the entire particle is gone.

What's the best way to handle this in Comsol? Any advice is appreciated.

-Peter
