Applying a step function at an unknown time

I need to apply a load on a boundary. my problem is that this load needs to be applied only if the deflection of a beem has exceeded a certain value. then I want this force to be applied in the opposite direction. the purpose for this modeling is to mimic the impact without troubling myself with time dependent contact problem and its complexity in comsol.
I am applying the load like this : (1000 [N/m])*(Clarence-current position)*((Clarence-current position)<0.001)
now I want to multiply the whole thing by a step function to avoid the transient effects of Impact loading. the problem is that the step has to start at the time in which my condition is met, some thing which is not known a priori.
