why the scattering cross section calculation result is negative?

Hi,

I am doing some calculation with comsol 4.2a, and I manage to do the scattering cross section calculation for the sphere model. Then I use exactly the same model, but change the sphere scatter to other nanostructures, for example, composed of several rods. But the calculation results for scattering cross section come to be negative! Is it physical nonsense to me. I don't know what's wrong.

I try to increase the mesh, but it's still negative. What may be the potential reason?

BTW, is anyone can tell what's the definition of Efar in comsol? Since I am not very familar with comsol 4.2 or newer version (I use comsol 3.5a before), how to check the equation system in comsol 4.2a? I mean how to check the definition for each electromagnetic parameters?

Thank you very much!

Hi,

Maybe you should check the background field of step 2, make sure that correspond to the right electric field (right wavelength) of step 1.
