Unable to view solution after saving and re-opening

Thought I'd post this here in case anyone else has run into a similar issue and has a working solution. I have a transient heat transfer problem (3D) that takes a long while (4 + days) to solve. The computation finished and I had a solution - all was well. I was able to plot, look at the results and save the model and solution without error. I left the file open on the computer for a day or so and came back to it and saw the "disk error reading from temporary solution file" message. I tried to re-open the saved model and solution but now find that I cannot plot the result (i.e clicking on plot does nothing). This is really bizarre and has caused a lot of frustration with using COMSOL. Here are some additional details:
The saved file size is around 750 MB (so the solution is in there somewhere!)
I have COMSOL running on a MAC (OS X 10.8.5) with 8GB of RAM; The temporary folder that I'm writing to (changed from default) has close to 1TB of space. For what its worth, the files system is Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Thanks!
Ann
