How can one smoothen a piecewisely constant variable?

Please login with a confirmed email address before reporting spam

Dear all,

Generally a dependent variable in COMSOL is a linear combination of 2nd order finite elements. And a variable u_eg defined as 2nd-order derivative of the dependent variable are essentially piecewisely constant. In case one would like to evaluate further the differential properties of u_eg, direct evaluation d(u_eg, x) will be globally zero. Is there a way to smoothen u_eg, in the sense that it has nonzero derivatives?

I think it's possible to export the data and then define an interpolation function from the data. However it's not very convenient.

Thanks!
