Question about the calculation of differential area

I found the expression of the variable "corrsec.dA" (differential area factor in the 2D corrosion module) is sqrt(d(x,xi1)^2+d(y,xi1)^2). I do not quite understand it and have following questions:
1. What is the physical meaning of the variable "corrsec.dA"?
2. What is the definition of the variable "xi1"? Is it related to spatial coordinates "x" and "y"? If so, can it be calculated by using other variables?
Would someone please help me? It will be of great help to me.
Thanks.
