S parameter

Hello

Would anyone please explain what actually is S parameter? And also the scripts like S11, S12, what do 11 and 12 mean? Does this have anything to do to calculate reflection or transmission?

Thanks

And also the subscript like S11, S12, S22 and S21, I don't get what they are actually signifying.
