Cracks in a 3D plate

I'd like to create a model of two plates laminated to one another, where one of the plates has many cracks in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the plates. For instance if you laminate a plate of glass to a plate of steel, then bent the laminate cracking the glass.
Any suggestions on how to accomplish this?

Hi,
It seems to me that you need a damage model, similar to the one discussed by my colleague Ed Gonzalez in a blog post yesterday:
