Acoustic Wave Crack Detection: A First Principles Approach
Crack detection is and has been an active field of exploration, both theoretical and applied for a number of years. It is the belief of this author that the concepts presented herein explore a new methodology for the modeling and the detection of cracks and families of cracks in crystalline solids, polycrystalline solids and high viscosity amorphous materials (glasses).
In the case of the models presented in this paper, it is demonstrated that the acoustic wave generated in the modeled material (solid), by the impulse load, interacts with the crack/crack family. As a result of the wave-crack interaction, the acoustic wave frequency distribution profile at the displacement point is modified. That modification is detected by Fourier Differential Analysis.
