In recent years, MEMS transducers, including microphones and speakers, have played an increasingly important role in the development of audio products such as earbuds, headsets, and hearing aids. The small size and audio qualities of MEMS transducers make them attractive to this segment of products. To develop transducers, as well as integrate them into devices, modeling and simulation is crucial.

The COMSOL Multiphysics® software helps you to efficiently model these types of devices through built-in features that capture thermoviscous losses, which are essential to include at small geometric scales. When setting up multiphysics simulations, the losses can be incorporated into vibroacoustic settings or transducer models, enabling the coupling of electromechanical forces. The software also offers a specialized acoustic slip-flow formulation for modeling MEMS devices operating in the slip-flow regime. Additionally, a combined multimethod approach enables seamless coupling with lumped electroacoustic representations, facilitating the integration of transducers into devices.
