Intial Step and Maximum Step in Time dependent Solver

I am doing a time-domain simulation of a single frequency which is around 50 THz. Essentially, my time domain should be in femto second (fs) range. My wavelength in this case is 6 micron. However, in the time dependent solver, I have chosen step taken by the solver to 'Strict' , moreover I have chosen 'initial step' to 0.1 [fs] and 'Maximum step' to 0.5 [fs]. I don't actually know how initial step and maximum step is working in this solver. This set up is taking 15 hours to compute my model which is way long much time I suppose. I would like to compute the model in more efficient way by understanding how initial step and maximum step actually works.
Can some one please kindly enlighten me about this issue ?
Thanks,
Rishad
