Axis labels in 2D plots?

It might sound like a stupid question... but is it possible to add axis labels in 2D surface plots?
I have a surface plot of a Cut Plane in my 3D model, and I just can't find a way to enter a label to the axis. For such a surface plot it is rather clear that the x and y axis of the plot represent spatial coordinates, but I would like to add some axis labels to i) indicate that the position is given in meters an ii) indicate along which direction the cut plane has been defined.
While I was always able to modify the labels in 1D plot groups, I just can't seem to find how to do it for 2D (or 3D for that matter) plot groups. Can anyone help me? I cannot imagine that this is impossible...
Thanks for your help
