Comsol 4.0a freezes temporarily

I'm using a classroom lincence of Comsol 4.0a on a MAC.
Since a few days I have the problem that Comsol freezes for some time (from seconds up to 30 min) while I'm working on the model.
This happens during very simple tasks, like opening the material-section.
Comsol is then listed as "not responding" and consumes 100% CPU power. Suddenly, seemingly without any reason, it is back again.
Any idea what could solve this problem?
