Imaginary energy density ?

after solving a electrostatic problem in 3D I am integrating the energy density (from the preset quantities) over a specific volume of my geometry.
What surprises me is that the resulting quantity is complex? Does COMSOL simply square the electric field, but does not take the multiplicaiton of E with E* where E* is the complex conjugate?
I find this a bit odd, but perhaps I don't understand what is going on.
thanks for advice,
j
