lava flow front model

Hi,

I'm trying to model the front of a lava flow to estimate the pressure on a barrier. I thought to use level set, phase field or ale model. I modeled a flow using level set function, but it was necessary to define an initial interface. Now, I'm trying to model using phase field or ale, who has suggest the best way to solve the problem?
