source term in a time indepdent analysis

I have a problem where I am solving the continuity of charge equations (solving for an electric potential field) with null mass/damping coefficients i.e., no accumulation, and a single Neuman BC on a portion on the domain (the remaining portion is insulated). The source term F is also set to zero (which does not make sense I know, but bare with me till the end)
COMSOL exits with the error " Failed to find consistent initial values" which is understandable.
However, when I select the electric potential of each portion of my domain as "integration coupling subdomain variables" and apply them as Dirichlet boundary conditions in an other geometry, the problem is solved, and non zero consistent source terms are calculated (checked by plotting the divergence of the flux) which sum up to the apllied Neuman BC.
This is a one way coupling, i.e., the potential fields are being given to an other system of equations only.
how come new source terms have been calculated?
any ideas?
