Moving Mesh Question

I wonder if anyone knows how (if it is possible) to expand/contract a boundary using a moving mesh, as opposed to providing a fixed displacement or velocity.

I tried to write a boundary condition dependent on the x-coordinate e.g. f(t)*(x/a) where -a < x < a so that the boundary alters in length according to f().

But this didn't work out - I got an error saying 'Circular variable dependency detected'.
