Difference between Port (incident E) and scattering boundary condition (incident E) in Electromagnetic Waves, Frequency Domain

I want to know the difference between port settings where we enable incident electric field and scattering boundary condition where also we can also do the same? assuming I want to study the reflectivity and transmission of different wavelengths through a designed surface what should I use ? if I am working in three dimension
