Topology Optimisation using Prescribed Displacement

I am using topology optimisation for a study using contact modelling. In order to get the contact model working I use a ramped prescribed displacement on the top face as my main loading condition to initiate contact and force some deformation. This works well and I get an appropriate stress distribution etc. I am then trying to implement topology optimisation to minimise the elastic strain energy in the domain. I have not been able to get this to work as the simulation either runs without penalising the geometry or gives the "Forward solution failed, requesting reduced step."
To test if prescribed displacement is the issue, I have created a simple beam topology optimisation with an edge load. When I replace the edge load with a prescribed displacement on the edge in the direction of the load, the solution no longer solves. Again giving "Forward solution failed, requesting reduced step."
Can topology optimisation not be used with a prescribed displacement or have I missed something in the setup?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Daniel Edwards
