Anisotropic materials in unusual shapes

I was wondering does anyone have experience of or know how you might go about defining a region with anisotropic properties where the coordinate system of the anisotropy is not a simple cartesian or cylindrical one?
In my case I have a flat ribbon material which is wound in many layers around a racetrack-shaped former. I want to define bulk properties for this region so that I don't have to model individual layers. The properties will therefore be the same in the direction along the length of the ribbon and across the ribbon width. However, in the direction going up through the layers the properties will be different.
I have seen how this can be done in the case of a 2D axisymmetric winding on a cylinder former but I'm not sure how to go about it for this more complicated case.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
