unable to edit material contents to create user defined material

I'm trying to set my own electrical conductivity for a model in the material contents box. I've apparently been able to do this before as I went through the comsol ERT example in which the electrical conductivity of the soil in an infinite half-space is defined by the user.
I went back to that ERT model and tried to create another material to see if I had not defined something correctly in my current model. I was unsuccessful.
