Is it possible to generate a mesh with inhomogeneous size parameter?

Dear all users and developers,

We know it's common to specify the size parameter(s) to control the behavior of mesh in a domain. However, the parameter is often a constant in a domain. I'm wondering if there's a way to generate a mesh with inhomogeneous size parameter in a domain. Why this question comes to my mind is that I would like to mesh a domain which has a variable M(x,y,z) defined on it. The variation (or inhomogeneity) of solution will be more or less proportional to this variable M, then I think it would be economical to generate a mesh according to M, i.e., mesh being dense when M is great and coarse when M is little.

Does any one have an idea about this?

Adaptive mesh might be similar to this concept, but doesn't appear quite nice to me.
