Fracture and cracks in brittle materials

Please login with a confirmed email address before reporting spam

Hello all,

I am looking for a little advice for dealing with a cracking brittle materials. I have a material thermally expanding it is quite brittle and I was hoping for some advice as to how to make the crack start, propagate and eventually terminate and maybe close. I want to avoid element deletion, perhaps a solution using xfem. I really don't know where to start, I would like an approach that allows me to specify a damage criteria.

I would appreciate any pointers to models that have done this previously.

General advice and tips.

Or even papers, the more details the better.

any help would be appreciated

Thank you kindly
